Is it a Hoax Or is it Real?

Many of us have received e-mail from friends, family members, or coworkers that seemed too shocking, funny, or weird to be true. Will private cell phone numbers soon be provided to telemarketers, causing you to pay for everything from aggressive insurance sales calls to credit card companies asking you to perform balance transfers? Is Apple, Google, or Microsoft giving away huge sums of cash to people who can forward the most e-mails? And is every e-mail discussing a political candidate's background, beliefs, or former colleagues true?

Unfortunately, many frequently distributed e-mails can be categorized as "urban legends". Urban legends are myths, nonfactual information presented in such a way, usually with a small bit of factual information, making the entire story seem plausible. They can take on an air of truth when forwarded enough times by reputable people, and also when covered by media professionals or bloggers looking for a hot story but failing to perform enough background research. However, due to changes in technology or someone attempting to create a "copycat crime", some urban legends have actually become true.

As an example of the latter, the "Goodtimes virus", a popular urban legend that started in the early 1990's, claimed that by reading an email with the subject of "Good Times", your computer would be infected with a virus. The claims varied from your hard drive being formatted or physically damaged to your computer crashing or being physically destroyed. So many of these warnings were passed around the Internet that they themselves caused problems, clogging up peoples' inboxes.

Unfortunately, with exploits found in e-mail software such as Microsoft Outlook, viruses now can spread by people previewing or even downloading rogue e-mail messages.

Sadly, urban legends do cause other problems. If believed, some legends cause undue worry and stress on the recipients. Some legends will change peoples' voting behaviors by spreading inaccurate information. And, unknowingly distributing legends may get one marked as a spammer, even though the original messages may not be commercial in nature.

Before believing everything you read on the Internet, consider visiting the "Snopes" website that helps determine whether or not the amazing story you just perused is fictional or contains a shred of truth.

Note that not all supposed legends are false. You can be scammed out of money by calling people in certain area codes. You should be aware that delivery notification errors or auction notification messages may be fakes, and clicking links could exposure yourself to virus infection or identity theft. And some surprising quotes can be correctly attributed to their senders - but not all.

Now that you can help determine what is and what is not an urban legend, try to prevent the myths from spreading further. If you receive an urban legend and personally know the sender, consider responding (just to the individual and NOT to the entire list!) with a polite message saying thanks for the e-mail, but the information is actually an urban legend. Of course, depending on the sender and the story, especially if it involves religion or politics, you may just want to ignore the message altogether, so use your best judgment.

Urban legends have made their way around the Internet for years, presenting amazing stories that seem like they could be true - but usually aren't. Don't believe everything you read, even if you know the person sending the information. Check stories out for yourself first, and if you find them to be false, consider politely alerting their senders. Understand that the Internet's speed allows information to travel faster than ever before, but misinformation tends to spread even faster.

The VoIP Revolution

More and more persons and companies seem to realize lately that technology is working to their advantage. This is how they’ve come to discover the numberless opportunities offered by the VoIP technology and how easy it can be to make Pc to Phone calls.

VoIP, meaning Voice over Internet Protocol, is an innovative advanced technology that allows audio data transmission by means of an internet connection. The major advantage of the VoIP technology is the possibility to lower the prices very much and maintain a high quality of the Pc to Phone calls at the same time. Thanks to these features, the VoIP technology is now being extensively used not only by large or small companies using Pc to Phone services, but also by lots of individual persons who use Voice Chat or Pc to Phone services. Depending on the VoIP provider, users might need a personal computer, a special VoIP phone or a traditional phone connected to a special adapter. Some VoIP services may only allow you to call other people using the same service, but others are less restrictive and may consent to calling just about anyone who has a phone number, including local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers.

There is no joke or dream. Indeed, anyone can make local, long distance or international Pc to Phone calls, which means that the voice conversation initiated by someone from his personal computer (PC) can be routed over the Internet or through any other IP-based network to a phone. In other words, Pc to Phone means calling a phone number from a Pc with an internet connection. The voice is converted into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. When calling a regular phone number, the signal is converted to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination. This is by far the most beneficial service, with large functionality, providing an outstanding quality at the same time.

Pc to Phone service is qualitatively superior to any other voice chat free service. More than that, when using Pc to Phone services, the person at the other end of the “wire” is not compelled to have an internet connection. A simple phone line will do; and if you don’t have a phone line in your house, then you can use a public phone booth. However, in order to generate Pc to Phone calls, you need to have a personal computer with a standard internet connection, minimally a dial-up connection. The moment the conversation is started, you must be connected to the internet.

Specialists recommend using headsets when making calls through VoIP services. The model of the headset you want to use is entirely up to your preferences or budget. USB headsets often offer higher quality than sound card headsets, but they are a little bit more expensive on the market. In all cases, do not use desktop speakers for listening to the call. Although the quality may sound fine to you, the people you call will hear a disturbing echo. All in all, the audio quality on the VoIP-based networks is equal to the quality of standard fixed telephone lines. And when minor details, such as always using headsets during conversation, are complied with, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the highest voice quality and the lowest delays in the communication field.

To cut a long story short, we must underline the fact the VoIP technology may be used in each and every location wanted by the caller. For instance, locations such as airports, parks, and café shops allow their customers to connect to the internet and make PC to Phone calls using VoIP services wirelessly.

A reliable VoIP provider

Voice over Internet Protocol, also known as VoIP, has grown in popularity over the past few years. There are some popular brands of VoIP services on the market that provide telephone service to individuals and businesses for monthly fees regardless of the nature of the calls, be they local, long distance or even international. Many VoIP providers allow you to use standard phones that once connected through a landline.

How does VoIP work? Your standard telephone landlines convert the voice into electric signals with the help of the transmitter. Those signals transfer to the person at the other end through cables. The receiver of the phone then decodes the electric signals. The process is the same with the VoIP calls. You can make the calls either by using your computer’s hardware or from a standard phone connected to the computer. The voice converts to digital signals, instead of electrical, and the receiver is another computer. The Internet takes the place of the cable transmitting system.

The advantages of VoIP services are numerous. It may be the reason why many businesses are choosing this communication alternative over the standard telephone access. Some features included in the packages VoIP providers offer are caller ID, call waiting and forwarding, three way calling and more. A major advantage of VoIP is the ability to route incoming calls to your VoIP service. Call retrieval is possible with your VoIP connection from any place that has Internet access. That is a big help for a businessperson.

You can check voicemails as easy as email with VoIP and you can save and send the messages as attachments. There are three major types of VoIP services available. One of them requires additional hardware called an analog telephone adapter, also known as ATA. This is instrumental for plugging in a standard phone and using it to make the VoIP calls. It may be a solution for many, but the extra hardware is not a very appealing feature and may require additional funds for purchase.

Something that may present a more comfortable solution is the softphone. This is a software program that you can install on every PC or laptop that has a microphone, speakers or headphones. The laptop may need a wireless Internet card, but if you choose to go this way, you will not have to travel with your ATA and physical phone. This will save some hassle and increase your level of comfort.

Here on maxatel.com, you can find a reliable VoIP provider that uses a softphone application. The software is easy to install and use and it is completely free. Another feature included in the package is the call shop. This consists of an online billing system and is free of charge for anybody who signs up for an account with this VoIP provider.

The call shop feature allows two levels of access. You can choose either to restrict the reporting and configuration of the system to an administrator, or to be available to all staff. The call shop is self-configuring. All you need to do is sign up, establish the currency by which you intend to charge your callers and finally set the rates you want your customers to pay. After that, you can check the call shop for your billing reports every three hours.

The most important feature that the choice of your VoIP provider is based on is the cost of operation. The Maxatel VoIP provider offers very low costs for international calls. You can check the rates section of the website to find out more. You will find that the costs for international calls are very low, making Maxatel the right VoIP provider for you.

If you consider all the features involved with VoIP services, it becomes clear that this way of communication will replace the traditional telephones. Choosing a reliable VoIP provider makes your life easier. The easy to use softphone software and the call shop feature to control the calls made are two aspects you do not want to miss

Is VoIP Vital?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the technology that allows you to make phone calls with the use of your home or office computer network. VoIP runs over a linked data network just as the Internet does. The voice signal from your phone is converted by this VoIP technology into a signal that is digitized to travel by Internet. It then is converted back to telephone technology so that a regular phone conversation is possible with any standard telephone number. When you place a phone call by VoIP using your standard phone with a VoIP adapter you hear a regular dial tone and you dial just as if it were a regular call over your telephone line. With VoIP you are sometimes able to call right from your computer using a conventional microphone or telephone.

You can call two different ways with VoIP. The first way is by installation of an adaptor directly to your Web connection. When using this method your telephone call actually is delivered via your landline carrier to a VoIP provider. The call is routed out over the Web to the recipient's phone carrier to complete the telephone call.

The other method for using VoIP is by plugging a headset and microphone directly into your computer. You then use your keyboard to dial the number and it routes right out by way of your cable modem. Setting up your VoIP phone connection requires a cable modem or something almost as fast such as your phone carrier's DSL equipment or LAN setup. Your phone can also directly connect to the adaptor. Your other option is to purchase a microphone that isn't very costly and hook it into your computer directly.

There is no standard VoIP service price. Each provider has its own charge. Some may even let you call other of its providers for free. Your VoIP provider may also offer you an area code of your own at no long distance charge. If you choose an area code elsewhere than your local one those calls, just as your home area calls, will be free of charges for long distance. The only problem, of course, would be if most of your callers are local. This could leave them with long distance charges to call you. Just be careful which area code you choose, with consideration for your consistent callers.

Who you can call with VoIP depends on which provider you use. You might be only able to call those who have the same provider or you might be able to make a call to anyone you choose anywhere in any country. You can make a VoIP call to a local landline, a cell phone, or a long distance domestic or international call. VoIP even allows conference calls. Whoever you are calling does not need VoIP, an adapter or even a computer. They just need a phone like any other call.

VoIP is digital, unlike the standard landline, and so there are services and features that you can't get with a conventional telephone. If your Internet connection is broadband then you can save yourself the expense of an additional phone line for calls. VoIP is advantageous because it can save you the cost of a landline and with the right provider can save you long distance charges. Some disadvantages of VoIP are that you may not be able to call out during a power or cable outage, and you may not have a direct 911 connection. You also may not have any directory assistance or white page listing.
